The Steps - Before and After, Kotor, Montenegro (One day exhibition Neonatology in art practis/drawings in gallery ''Decatera'' as an introduction to performance "The Steps - Before and After " by Olga Suvorova* from "Bolshoy Theatre" and Nikola Marković)

This project prompted the making of a film which, using the effect of overlapping frames, shows the movements of baby's feet merging into the images of the similar movements of the ballerina, spontaneously executed during the performance. The sound for the film is a synchronization of the ballerina's heartbeat and the heartbeat of a newborn baby.

Speaking about the baby's prenatal movements during the film, I tried to point out that the rhythm of our contemporary way of life has become mechanical, and how man's obsesssion with science and technology has led him ever more astray from the purity and joy of his first steps.

Work on this project required special psychological preparations and training by the ballerina and this sometimes included hypnosis performed by the artist himself.

The working title of the film is "The steps - Before and After" with the duration of 12,5 minutes.

This film has been produced in co-operation with the Cultural Centre Kotor/MNE

BALLERINA OLGA SUVOROVA

After the performance of Olga Suvorova in Swan Lake the Russian press wrote "a new ballerina is born". This statement in the press was not surprising for the one who trained her and constantly kept an eye on her from her beginnings to the state of perfection.

Her balletic development unfolded under a perpetual attention and supervision of G. Uljanova and M. Semjonova. She achieves the status of a solo dancer in the very first year of her work with the Bolshoi Theatre when, in the best traditional sense she becomes a classical and romantic ballerina.

In March 1991 she receives general recognition of the critics for her part as Nikki in the "Bajaderka" ballet production.

The Bolshoi Ballet organizes for her a world premiere in Japan, India, South America, France, England, Belgium Holland, Spain, Italy, Greece, South Korea, USA, Scotland and Ireland

The mastery she demonstrated on stage was elevated to a higher level when she met Mihail Shenon, who, after completing MAXY (?) joins the Bolshoi Theatre troupe.

Together, in Astaf Meserer's classes they worked on bringing their execution to perfection dancing in different spectacles.

In the following years they built up a reputation of perfect partners and started a big Soviet Union tour.

Jurij Gligorovich, director of the Bolshoi Theatre and chief choreographer enabled O. Suvorova and M. Shenon to tour the US. One year later, they became husband and wife.

  1. Suvorova was a soloist of the Boshoi Ballet from 1984-1991. Between 1991 and 1993 she performed in the Vienna National Opera and Ballet Theatre. Now, she is a soloist of the Kremlin Palace Ballet Theatre.
